Estimate Your Carbon Footprint

Activities in our daily lives generate greenhouse gas emissions. Sometimes these emissions are obvious, such as the exhaust from the tailpipe of our car. Sometimes, however, the emissions are not as obvious.

Did you know that the things you throw in the garbage can create greenhouse gas emissions at the landfill as they decompose? Or that turning on your television or other electrical equipment in your home can create greenhouse gas emissions at the electricity generation station? Your carbon footprint is a measure of the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced by your daily activities.

The CCRI has designed a calculator to help you estimate your carbon footprint. The calculator also provides a number of "pledges" - activities that can help you reduce your carbon footprint and combat climate change. You will be able to select as many or as few pledges as you would like to undertake in the next year as you take action to reduce your impact on our environment.

You may need the following information handy to answer some of the questions on the calculator:

  • a recent electric, gas, propane, and/or oil bill
  • the fuel efficiency of your vehicle(s)

The calculator and pledges should only take 5-10 minutes to complete.
