Clean Air Day
Clean Air Day is celebrated annually on the Wednesday during Canadian Environment Week. Both represent an opportunity to celebrate clean air, our beautiful natural environment and the environmental efforts of individuals, businesses, and organizations across the country. Protecting Canada's natural environment reaps a world of benefits for Canadians, from strengthening the economy to enhancing health and quality of life. Canadian Environment Week is the perfect time to celebrate our achievements and initiatives in tackling climate change and reducing air pollution.
The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. Biodiversity can be defined as being the variety of all life on earth. Celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity is a unique opportunity to increase our understanding of the vital role biodiversity plays in sustaining life on Earth. This year's theme for Canadian Environment Week is: Embracing Life on Earth.
The Cornwall Carbon Reduction Initiative (CCRI) is pleased to announce a number of upcoming activities that are taking place during Canadian Environment Week. The week runs from May 30 to June 5, 2010.
Commuter Challenge
For the second year in a row, the CCRI will be acting as the host agency for Cornwall and area's 2010 Commuter Challenge, as we are continuing to encourage residents throughout the region to adopt alternative transportation methods. Bicycling, walking, rollerblading, and taking public transit are all great choices to make our lives healthier, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help make our region a cleaner, greener place to live.
Getting Green off the Ground
Cornwall Transit, the Cornwall Public Library and the CCRI are partnering on the Third Annual Getting Green off the Ground presentation series. The presentations will be highlighting ways that students can lead by example to help our community adopt greener lifestyles and methods of transportation throughout the year!
Topics discussed include: what is carbon dioxide; where does carbon dioxide come from; choosing alternative methods of transportation; Cornwall Transit bus routes; and the Cornwall Public Library's Read to Ride program (allows students under 12 to join a book club in which they can use their library card as their bus pass).
